Dufur goes all out for Homecoming
Marcia Underhill serves as marshal
A three-day celebration marks Dufur High School’s 2009 homecoming this weekend.
Marcia Underhill is grand marshal for the event.
Underhill moved to dufur in 1962 from Wamic. She began her career at Dufur School part-time in 1971 and became full-time in 1977.
She began as a substitute and helped out in different areas of the school, but settled into the kitchen, where she has become a key fixture in the Dufur School District for the past 32 years. Some of her specialties and favorites are cheese zombies, weiner wraps and her famous cinnamon rolls.
Underhill is also a dedicated Dufur booster, supporting students in their school activities.
She attends sporting events in full red-and-white attire, complete with matching earrings, her collection of which includes pairs made by local students and residents.
Both of Underhill’s children attended Dufur School.
She has many homecoming memories. Among those are recollections of Rick Cantrell working hard to get things together, slower than Underhill liked. She worried that the work wouldn’t get done.
She also recalls spending many hours with Barbara Paist working on floats.
Underhill will be joined this year by her friend and surrogate “Mom,” Fern Patrick, 94. Patrick may be the oldest Dufur alumnus.
Underhill said she is excited to share this year’s homecoming with Patrick.
