Gorge Cup off to the races

MacRae Wylde edged out Bruce Peterson Saturday afternoon to pick up the first win on the season in the annual Gorge Cup windsurfing race series. With 21 racers ages 15-68 in attendance at the early-season race, held at the Hood River Event Site, light wind and cold water tested the dedication of the entrants. By early afternoon, wind picked up enough to get in four slalom heats, allowing racers to toss out their lowest time and keep their best three.

Varsity squad ends season with first-round playoff loss vs. fifth-ranked Ashland

The Hood River Valley High School varsity baseball season came to a close Wednesday with a 5-1 loss against the Ashland Grizzlies. The Eagles (13-13 overall) traveled to Ashland (17-9) for the first round of the OSAA State Championships, which it qualified for with a 9-1 play-in game victory last week against Milwaukie.

Work parties highlight cross-party cooperation

Area second graders tour Schreiner Farms in Dallesport

What’s a camel’s favorite food? If that camel is Calypso from Schreiner Farms in Dallesport, Wash. then the answer is Wheat Thins. That’s what John Schreiner, who runs the exotic animal farm with his brother Joe, told students Friday as he showed them a few tricks he had taught Calypso and then led the camel around the yard with their teacher astride, much to the delight of the giggling students.
