A new community choir for children is looking for new members to prepare for concerts on May 31 and June 1.
The newly formed Cascade Children’s Choir will perform with the Cascade Singers during their next concert, titled “Music from Movies and Musical Theatre.”
“The choir is still very much evolving, but these kids are so fun,” said Lloyd Walworth, director.
He said the children already performed with the Cascade Singers once, during their St. Patrick’s Day concert in March. Right now there are 12 children in the group, but Walworth hopes to get more involved before the next concert.
He said the choir was the idea of Corin Parker, the music teacher at Chenowith Elementary School. When she joined the Cascade Singers she suggested it might be fun to have a community choir for children that could perform a few numbers at the Cascade Singers’ concerts. Walworth said he was eager to act on the idea and “quickly taught a small, talented group of children some Irish folksongs to toss into the traditional Celtic musical stew” for the St. Patrick’s Day Concert.
Right now the children are practicing songs from Disney movies like Mary Poppins.
“The kids are having fun,” Walworth said. “They come in with some talent so they’re ready to go.”
Entrance into the choir requires what Walworth calls a “friendly” audition. “They just basically have to sing a song in tune. It’s just a little screening to make sure they will be successful immediately,” he said.
For the last round of voice tests he used the song “Happy Birthday.”
The choir is open to children from third to eighth grade whose voices haven’t changed yet. Walworth said some children in the choir right now joined so they could perform with their parents in the Cascade Singers.
Rehearsals for the choir are every Wednesday from 3:30-4:15 p.m. in the Chenowith Elementary music room.
