Jumpstart track meet scheduled

With the emphasis on promoting a healthy lifestyle for local youths across the Gorge, Colonel Wright instructor Tom Conklin is organizing the annual Jumpstart Elementary School spring track meet set to run from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4 at Wahtonka High School.

All children from kindergarten through fifth grades are encouraged to participate, as they duke it out in track and field events ranging from sprints, long jump and field events.

This is a free presentation, and ribbons are awarded to the top five boys and girls in each grade and event.

Get ready for Cherry Blossom run

The annual Cherry Blossom 3k, 5k and 10k run/walk is on tap for 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 27 at Dry Hollow Elementary School in The Dalles.

Cost to register is $20 with a shirt and $5 without for pre-registered members before April 26.

Awards are offered to the top three runners in each age division, all runs.

Fundraiser golf tourney on tap

St. Mary’s Academy Foundation of The Dalles will host its fourth annual Golf Tournament on Friday, May 10 at The Dalles Country Club.

Registration is limited to the first 64 players and the pre-registration fee is set at $100 per player.

On the day of the event, registration will be $125.

All proceeds from this event support St. Mary’s Academy Tuition Assistance Program.

Every participant will receive a specially designed tee prize. Also, golfers will vie for raffle items, silent auction opportunities, refreshments both on and off the course, as well as lunch.

In addition, there are cash prizes for both teams and individuals and there are hole-in-one prizes.

Cherry Crush to host poker night

The Dalles area Cherry Crush softball program is hosting its annual Texas Hold ‘Em poker tournament starting at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 27 at The Dalles Country Club in The Dalles.

There are only a few tickets remaining and they go for $25 apiece with half the money going toward the pot.

The other half goes toward the softball program for equipment upgrades, travel costs, entry fees and other expenses.

Adult softball taking signups

The North Wasco County Parks and Recreation Department has opened up registration for the 2012 adult co-ed softball season for this summer.

All games are played on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings and some Thursdays at Kramer Field on Webber Street.

The season runs from May 22 until the final regular season game Aug. 9.

Registration packets are available in the Parks office or parties can register at

TD Mule Deer banquet planned

The Dalles Mule Deer Foundation is holding its 20th annual fundariser and auction banquet starting at 5 p.m. and running until 10 p.m. on Saturday, April 20 at St. Peters Parish Hall behind St. Mary’s Church in The Dalles.

Dinners consisting of chicken Kiev or bacon-wrapped steaks will be offered for guests.

There will be a wide array of outdoor items on display in both silent and oral auctions, including some specially-marked memorabilia with the 25th anniviersary stitching insignia attached.

Challenger BB season set

The Dalles Challenger Baseball organization has announced its schedule for the upcoming 2013 season.

Challenger baseball is a division of Little league, providing school-aged children with physical or mental challenges an opportunity to play baseball in a safe and fun environment.

Games are played at 2 p.m. every Sunday afternoon from May 5-June 9 on the middle school campus at 16th Street Ballpark in The Dalles.

Community members are welcomed to come out and cheer on the kids.
