Letter to the Editor: Coal controversy

— Coal controversy

To the editor:

After reading the article in the Tuesday, April 10, edition, I truly felt how some of our local political elected officials are not looking out for the best interest of our community and the environment.

Why should America send coal to a country that has little or no safeguards to protect the environment, which in turn affects the atmosphere of our whole planet?

Why do we think that a few jobs is worth risking the health and future of our children and their children?

Why does our local elected official waste time supporting jobs in other counties and states that have nothing to do with our area?

Wasco County will see no jobs from the coal shipments through the gorge. All we will see is about 20 more trains a day going through our town, probably spewing dust and coal along the way, along with a lot of additional noise.

Please, local officials, focus on our area in a healthy and positive way that will provide a good future for the younger folks and residents alike. The foreign interest that is pushing this coal issue is the one that will be making all the money and the American people, along with the world in whole, will lose by ruining the environment. Some day, America may be able to use all that coal for us, when it can be used safely.
