Letter to the Editor: Why Wal-Mart?

— Why Wal-Mart?

To the editor:

I still can’t figure out why we need another Wal-Mart in this area. We already have one in Hood River.

This rapacious family of billionaires owns more wealth than 40 percent of the American people.

Why can’t we bring a decent business like CostCo, or better yet, a co-op owned by local people?

We don’t need Wal-Mart’s penny ante, part-time jobs that no one can live on, nor do we need their chintzy, condescending attitude toward employees.

Surely we can do better.

Completely agree with Nelson on the WalMart question. Why would we choose to tank an already struggling local economy?! If we want to turn The Dalles into a slum, allowing WalMart into our community is a terrific first step. We want to welcome businesses that pay a decent, living wage, that will offer a better lifystyle to members of our community. Don't we want jobs that will allow people to shop in our local stores? Or instead, will we turn our downtown into a ghost town? Who will this benefit?? It doesn't matter what promises WalMart makes: their business history proves them ingenuous.
Bringing WalMart into The Dalles would be a disastrous leadership decision.

I think the real issue in this community is leadership.

If we want The Dalles to prosper we must first change the malaise of our community leaders. Attitudes of "we're just The Dalles," need to change. We need to graciously embrace changes. To develop a vibrant downtown, we need to encourage businesses to set up shop. A key component, in my view, is supporting the businesses that are already there, patronize the local restaurants downtown and make downtown a destination.

When Walmart is built, it will provide jobs in the community. Not all jobs need to be full-time, there will be more than 100 jobs created that can benefit families with that extra income that will be spent in the community, Not only that, there will be additional businesses that are drawn to the Walmart location that will employ many other people in town, and don't forget that Walmart will also draw more people into the community to shop there and elsewhere and visit the local restaurants.

Our local leaders need to encourage development of new business to benefit our community, be it retail or manufacturing. A focused energy needs to be on downtown specialized retail and restaurant development, businesses that do not compete with Walmart but provide speacialty retail. Further, we need things for the youth of our community to do and be involved in. There should be a focus on a recreational center, like a YMCA or such in our community. What are the community leaders doing for the the youth of The Dalles.

My question is what are our leaders doing, and what are you doing to make The Dalles at better place to live? We are part of the problem but we are also the solution!
