SPAGHETTI FUNDRAISER: The St. Mary’s Academy Band will serve a spaghetti dinner Saturday, April 27, from 4:30 to 8 p.m. in the St. Peter’s Parish Hall. Dinner will include: spaghetti (your choice of marinara sauce, meat sauce, olive oil & garlic or plain noodles), salad, garlic bread, drinks (lemonade or water) and dessert.
Tickets are $6 each and will be available at the door. Tickets may be pre-purchased form band students or the school office, 541-296-6004. Proceeds will be used to fund the spring band trip to Idaho.
POKER FUNDRAISER: The Dalles Wahtonka High School student Mary McIntosh is fundraising to earn money for an AFS exchange trip to Norway. Her family will host a poker night Saturday, May 18, at the Hi-Way House in The Dalles. Registration is at 9:30 p.m., with the game starting at 10.

JAZZ CONCERT: High school jazz bands from the Mid-Columbia will gather for their 12th annual Mid-Columbia Jazz Night Monday, April 22, at 6:30 p.m., at The Dalles Civic Auditorium ballroom in The Dalles.
Participating in this year’s event are jazz ensembles from The Dalles Wahtonka, White Salmon, Goldendale and Hood River.
Admission will be $5 single or $10 per family at the door. Proceeds benefit the Civic.
SPEAKER’S FORUM: The Mid Columbia Fellowship of Churches will be having their Speaker’ Forum on April 23, 5 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 305 East 11th St. across the street from the High School. The speaker for the month will be Judge Janet Stauffer who will give us an update on Youth Court and Drug Court. A light snack and coffee will be served.
OYSTER FEED: Mid-Columbia Shrine Club 29th annual oyster feed fundraiser will be April 24, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Windseeker Restaurant, 1535 Bargeway Rd., The Dalles. Cost is $25 a person for oysters, razor clams or stuffed chicken.
Net proceeds are for the benefit of Mid-Columbia Shrine Club activities. Tickets are not deductible as a charitable contribution.

OFFICE CLOSURE: The Hood River Ranger District Office will be closed April 30 through May 4, as a new HVAC system is installed. During that period, the Visitor Information Center will be closed, information staff will not be available, and phone services will be down There will be no special forest product permits issued during this closure period Forest permitees are asked to plan ahead and acquire forest product permits before or after the closure period.

GARDEN CLUB: The Dufur Valley Garden Club’s annual plant and bake sale will be Saturday, May 4, at 8 a.m., at the Catholic Hall on First and Church streets in Dufur.
CASA TRAINING: Columbia Gorge CASA has set its Spring Volunteer Training to start May 9. CASA volunteers advocate for the best interests of kids who are in foster care. CRAFTERS SOUGHT: Cherry Heights Retirement is seeking crafters and vendors to participate in its spring bazaar. Space is limited, so vendors are asked to sign up soon at 541-296-6880.

LEADERSHIP SEMINARS: Beginning in April, Columbia Gorge Community College will offer a series of leadership seminars. Participants may choose the entire nine-month series or take individual seminars. Class dates are May 14, June 11, July 9, August 13, Sept. 10, Oct. 8, Nov. 12, and Dec. 10.

SPRING CONCERT: “Music from Movies and Musicals” is the title of the Cascade Singers’ 2013 spring concert.

HAVEN RIDE: Breakaway promotions is organizing the first Gorge-us Gals Ride all-women’s bike ride to benefit HAVEN, serving victims of domestic violence and sexual assault Sunday, June 2, starting at 7 a.m. at Riverfront Park in The Dalles.
This fully supported ride was created by those passionate about cycling, friendship, fitness and the desire to “brake the cycle” of violence. It includes 13-mile, 20-mile, 40-mile and 60-mile route options.

EXCHANGE FAMILIES: AFS is seeking host families for exchange students. Students arrive in August and stay for 10 months.
The sooner applications are completed, the more students host families have to choose from and the better chance to find a student who best fits with family habits, interests and activities.
The Dalles Wahtonka accepts up to three exchange students, while Hood River Valley High School accepts one. Dufur would also like to have an exchange student.

MOVING FUND: A fund has been established at Rivermark Community Bank to help with relocation expenses for Kathryn Riter and her 5-year-old son. Riter sustained head injuries Jan. 23 from a hammer attack in connection with the alleged kidnapping of her 5-year-old son.
Riter and her son want to move out of the house where memories of the attack linger, but their limited means won’t cover moving costs. The family is also seeking a rental house that can qualify for HUD. Riter lived at her previous address for six years and always paid her bills on time, family reported.

AFTER SCHOOL: Thursday afternoons at Sherman Elementary in Grass Valley, a kids’ cooking class was recently added as part of the afterschool program, “Sherman Kids on the Road to Excellence” (SKORE).
Led by OSU Sherman County Extension staff and teen 4-H members, and assisted by a teen employee of the afterschool program, the opportunity to cook has been well-received by enthusiastic youngsters.
The goal of the cooking program is to focus on basic skills to inspire self-sufficiency and self-confidence in the kitchen.
