Gorge Roller Girls ready to hit the hardwood once again in Washington

— The Gorge Roller Girls All-Star team is travelling north this weekend to represent the Gorge in Spokarnage: a killer roller derby tournament. From Friday night to Sunday morning, the Gorge Roller Girls will be skating against teams from all over the northwest, including their original rivals: the Hermiston Melon Smashers. The Gorge’s very first bout last June was against Hermiston, where they lost 176-97. In the past year, the Gorge Roller Girls have grown in number and skill and, having won their most recent bout against the high-ranked Southern Oregon Rollergirls, the GRG All-Stars are ready for a rematch against Hermiston. “It will feel very good when we beat them this time,” says Minndestructable, a GRG blocker from Bingen, WA.

Spokarnage is hosted by Spokane’s roller derby team the Spokannibals, and they are expecting twenty teams to compete in the tournament this weekend.

GRG will be the youngest league in the tournament, having just celebrated their one-year anniversary in March. “I am very anxious to see how we stack up against the other leagues that have a lot more experience than us,” says Coach Yo-Duh. “But, I am also excited to see how the experience will make all of us grow. This is our first chance to show all of the other leagues and ourselves what we can do!”

Fans will be able to see live updates of the Gorge Roller Girls’ progress at Spokarnage on the league’s facebook page: www.facebook.com/gorgerollergirls

About the Gorge Roller Girls:

Founded in 2012, the Gorge Roller Girls (www.gorgerollergirls.com) are a flat-track, quad-skating, all-women’s roller derby league based in the Columbia River Gorge.
