The Dalles 15U Babe Ruth bats were on fire in the second and third innings of their pool play game Thursday, Aug. 1, and that was enough to defeat Calgary, Alberta, Canada, 8-7 at the Pacific Northwest Regional Playoffs in Centralia, Wash.
“The boys played OK,” said coach Matt McCall. “They didn’t play a great team, but they played well enough to win. They had some timely hits and put the hammer on early, so they were up 8-3.”
Calgary claimed first blood in the bottom of the first inning, as pitcher Payton Eaton worked to bring his pitching under control and gave up a series of walks for a 1-0 Calgary lead.
The offensive rally started in the top of the second inning when Kellen Mathisen doubled to left center. Dylan DesRochers was hit by a pitch to advance, then Alex McCall singled to left field. One batter later, at the top of the order, Devin Wilson singled to right. Dawson Reynier then laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners.
Payton Eaton knocked a solid double into left field bringing to cap the four-run rally, giving The Dalles a 4-1 lead.
Calgary answered back with one run in the second inning before The Dalles doubled its score in the top of the third starting the rally with a left-field double from Colton Walker. One batter later, DesRochers became the second runner on base with a walk, then McCall singled to center. Cash Mathewson also singled. All four scored, bringing the team lead to 8-2.
Calgary answered right back with four solid runs in the top of the third inning and another in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough and The Dalles held on through seven innings to claim the win.
All together, the team tallied 14 hits
“We hit the ball pretty well off their pitcher,” McCall said. “One through nine, we hit the ball pretty well.”
Payton Eaton earned the pitching win with 2 2/3 innings pitched, striking out four and giving up two hits, eight walks and five errors. Dawson Reynier relieved for 3 1/3 innings, striking out two and giving up three hits, but no walks or errors.
The Dalles played North Washington today after press deadlines at 1 p.m. and must win to stay alive for the final championship rounds this weekend.
“The North Washington team’s play is pretty good,” McCall said. “And they’ve got great pitching.” McCall hopes Colton Walker will be in top form pitching against the North Washington team.
