HORSE CONTEST: Enter the Best Looking Horse in Wasco County contest at the Wasco County Fair Friday, Aug. 16 at 4 p.m. All breeds are welcome, from ranch horses to show hors. Halter classes include geldings and mares.

The event is free to enter and will offer cash awards.

FULL-YEAR SCHOLARSHIP: The 2013-14 Columbia Gorge Community College full-year foundation scholarship application is now available. Any Mid-Columbia resident may apply. Recipients may be awarded up to 12 credits per term, which can only be used at Columbia Gorge Community College. Applications can be picked up in the Student Services department at The Dalles or Hood River campus, as well as online at http://cgcc. us/financial-aid/scholarships.

Applications must be hand-delivered to either The Dalles or Hood River Student Services no later than noon, Thursday, Aug. 8.

CLASS 45TH: The Dalles High School Class of 1968 will have an informal celebration of its 45th reunion the weekend of Aug. 9 and 10. Details of the various events planned can be found online at under the “Options for the Weekend” link.

Aug 10

FREE PLAYS: Theatre Company of The Dalles and Northern Wasco County Parks District hosts Free Plays in the Park featuring “Briar Rose”. Aug. 10, at 11 a.m. at The Dalles City Park. This audience participation play is geared towards children but the whole family is welcome to enjoy this timeless tale of Sleeping Beauty. Bring your blanket or lawn chairs, barbecue lunch will be available for sale from The Dalles Moose Lodge.

August 11

SUNDAY RIDES: Monthly social bike rides are planned through September. The rides are every second Sunday, Aug. 11 and Sept. 8, starting at 7 p.m. at The Dalles City Park. The rides are described as a “flat, slow, fun and easy” half-hour loop.

August 13

SUPPORT GROUP: The next meeting of the Widows of Veterans Gathering & Support Group will be Tuesday, Aug. 13, at 11a.m. at the Veteran Services Office in The Dalles.

These gatherings are an opportunity for grief support as well as ensuring that widows of veterans are aware of and accessing all the support available from Veteran Services.

SCHOOL CAMPAIGN: Salvation Army and St. Vincent de Paul are teaming up to ask for donations for their back to school campaign. The money will go to purchase school supplies and backpacks for more than 400 low-income students in Wasco, Sherman, Hood River and Klickitat counties. Supplies will be handed out to qualifying children on Aug. 30.

Checks made out to the Salvation Army can be sent to P.O. Box 1970, The Dalles, OR 97058 and checks made out to St. Vincent de Paul can be sent to P.O. Box 553, The Dalles, OR 97058. Donations of school supplies will also be accepted.

Low-income families are also welcome to sign up to receive a donation of school supplies at the Salvation Army or St. Vincent de Paul in The Dalles. Sign-up deadline is August 16.

August 17

BARBECUE COOKOFF: The Wasco County Fair and Endless Summer host the barbecue cookoff Saturday, Aug. 17 at the fair. Pork loin (2½ to 3 pounds) will be provided. Contestants are to bring a grill and cooking supplies. The winner will be based on judging criteria including appearance, taste and creativity.

FAIR RUN: Pre-registration for the Wasco County Fair Run and Walk will continue through Aug. 14. The run is set for Saturday, Aug. 17, and includes 3K, 5K, and 10K versions and divisions for all ages. The top three runners in each division will receive ribbons.

Cost to pre-register is $18 with a shirt, $10 without. Proceeds benefit the PE program at South Wasco County High School.

COLUMBIA SWIM: The 71st annual Roy Webster Columbia River Cross-Channel Swim will be Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2, starting at 5:30 a.m. at the Hood River Visitor Center, 720 E. Port Marina Drive, Hood River.

At dawn on Labor Day a group of hearty souls boards the Sternwheeler Columbia Gorge at the Hood River Port and is ferried across to the Washington shore. When signaled, swimmers jump off the sternwheeler into the Columbia and head back to Hood River along a volunteer-delineated swim lane.

DAM TOURS: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will offer tours of The Dalles Dam this summer, every Saturday and Sunday at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Tours will end the last weekend of September.

To reach The Dalles Dam Visitor Center, from Interstate 84, take Exit 87 and go east on Brett Clodfelter Way, located at the junction of U.S. Highway 197 and I-84.

FARMERS MARKET: The Dalles Farmers Market is now open every Saturday through Oct. 13 and will launch its Wednesday evening market starting June 12 from 4 to 7 p.m.

In addition to the Farmers Market vendors, several musicians have been booked to participate. The market is also adding a limited number of local artisan booths this year.

Items typically available at the market include salad greens, fresh flowers, farm-fresh eggs, locally produced USDA meats, fresh vegetables and fruits, locally produced honey, jams, jellies and other processed items produced in approved commercial kitchens or under Oregon Department of Agriculture rules.

ZUMBA PROGRAM: Northern Wasco County Parks and Recreation along with Licensed Zumba Instructor’s Marsha Morrison and Brenda Green are offering Zumba to the community at the Muscle and Fitness Center, 915 Garrison St., Mondays at 9 a.m., Tuesdays 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., and Thursdays 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Drop-in fee is $5. A punch card is available.

SOIL TESTING: OSU Wasco County Master Gardeners now offer soil testing every week through October 2013. Garden soil will be tested for nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, pH, humus, and texture.

GENEALOGY MEETS: The Columbia Gorge Genealogical Society meets the second Saturday of each month at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center. The public and guests are welcome. A no-host lunch starts at noon in the Basalt Cafe.
