The Dalles A lightning storm moving south to north sparked multiple fires in the hills near Wamic, Dufur and The Dalles Friday evening, Aug. 9.
Two fires were reported early in the evening in Wamic, and the Wamic Fire Department requested mutual aid from Tygh Ridge. Crews in Wamic had extinguished both fires and returned to quarters by 8:30 p.m.
Heavy smoke was reported in the Long Hollow area of Dufur, in the area of the Dufur Grange.
A fire was reported in the 7,000 block of 8-mile road, and after arriving on scene Oregon Department of Forestry requested four brush trucks for mutual aid from Mid Columbia Fire and Rescue, to assist in fighting the fire estimated at 50 to 100 acres.
Heavy rain accompanied the storm, causing many watching the Cruise the Gorge Classic Weekend car cruise downtown The Dalles to take shelter under building overhangs and umbrellas.
