Public meeting tonight on Government Flats Fire Complex

— The public is invited to a Community Meeting, Tuesday, August 20, 6:30 PM, at the Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue, 1400 West 8th Street. Information on the status of the Government Flat Complex Fires will be provided by incident management personnel.

The Blackburn Fire continued to be hit by gorge-influenced winds. The fire spread was in all directions due to the strong erratic winds. The fire was estimated at 4700 acres Monday evening, Aug. 19.

The City of The Dalles water treatment facility operations are not affected by the current evacuation notices. The Dalles Public Works Department is working closely with the fire suppression personnel in protecting the treatment facility.

Fire officials received confirmation of the loss of two homes and five outbuildings since the fire began.

The Government Flat Complex had 714 firefighters and support personnel on day and night shifts. Most efforts were focused on the Blackburn Fire. Forces included air tankers, seven helicopters, 10 dozers, six water tenders, 19 wildland engines and 25 hand crews working in the attempt to anchor and build a control line around the incident. The five structural task forces of engines (72 personnel), assessed and imrpoved the defensible space around homes, as well as aggressive structural protection today.

The Government Flat and Wells Road fires are considered contained and in patrol status.
