Fire meeting set for Saturday evening

Fire shows minimal growth Friday

Invitation: The public is invited to a community meeting Saturday, August 24, at 6:30 pm, The Dalles-Wahtonka High School, 220 East 10th Street, The Dalles. Information on the status of the Government Flats Complex fires will be provided by incident management personnel and cooperators.

Personnel involved in fighting the Government Flats Fire Complex, including the still very active Blackburn Fire and the contained Wells Fire and Government Flats Fire, numbered more than 1,000 today.

The fire increased in size more slowly than the past few days, growing from about 11,300 acres this morning to just over 12,000 acres this evening.

A storm cell passed over the fire today and helped hold the fire down with cooler temperatures, some moisture and a delay in the winds coming out of the west. A level 3 evacuation is in place in Ketchum Road, Vensel Road, Godberson Road and Mosier Creek, according to information on the Inciweb website. Fire information officials announced a stop to evening information releases while fire conditions remain largely unchanged. A level 2 evacuation is in place for structures along Upper Mill Creek Road, Wells Road, Browns Creek Road, Cherry Heights, Chenoweth Road and Obrist Road. The evacuation levels will increase if the fire moves to the east.

Growth potential for the fire remains listed at high.

Fire commanders plan to:

  • Continue to mop up on the north, east, and south sides of the fire.

  • Burn out along newly established lines on the west and NW side of the fire perimeter.

  • Limit impacts to private lands, structures, public lands and protection of the City of The Dalles Watershed and water treatment plant.

  • Continue to evaluate threats to residences and develop trigger points for evacuations as needed.
