State trooper wounded near Rufus, suspect dead at the scene, I84 closed at the scene

3:25 p.m. update:

I-84 between Biggs Junction (MP 104.5) and Rufus (MP 109) is closed in both directions. A 5-6 hour closure is expected. Motorists heading westbound on I-84 should exit at Rufus and use Highway 30 to Biggs Jct. Motorists heading eastbound should exit I-84 at The Dalles Bridge and use Washington Highway 14.

2:27 p.m. update:

The suspect involved in the officer involved shooting along Interstate 84 east of The Dalles is deceased at the scene of the incident. Interstate 84, Biggs Junction Milepost 105 - 109 remains closed for the investigation of the incident. Police are awaiting arrival of the public information officer before more information will be released.


An Oregon State Police trooper was wounded Thursday afternoon during a traffic stop along Interstate 84 near Rufus. Additional law enforcement resources are enroute to the scene.

A trooper pulled a man over for traffic stop at Milepost 106 and state police say he was shot, said State Police Public Information Officer Gregg Hastings. The suspect in the case has been detained. More information will be made available after Hastings arrives on the scene from Portland.
