South Wasco County put up 30 more shots than Portland Lutheran, but fell short on the scoreboard in a 68-64 boy’s basketball setback Friday at home to Portland Lutheran.
The Redsides had a bit of control through one quarter in taking a 19-17 lead, but from there, Portland Lutheran got its wits together for a 22-9 run in the second frame to lead 39-28 at the break.
SWC worked a 22-13 rally in the third quarter to creep to within two points, 52-50 with eight minutes left to play.
The Redsides had chances in the fourth quarter to overcome that deficit, but could not get the shots to fall down the stretch.
David Ocacio had 24 points, five rebounds and four steals, and the tandem of Travis Hayes and Nathan Duling combined for 23 points and 17 rebounds.
Loreto Morelli added nine points, and Colton Nannini had eight points, six rebounds and four steals.
“This is a very intelligent team,” said SWC coach Jim Hull. “These guys are willing to do everything I ask of them. They give 100 percent out there all the time. As long as each game shows a little bit of growth and allows us to fix the things we need to work on, I can see the next seven preseason games preparing us well for our first league game on Jan. 3.”
SWC (1-2 overall) was in Perrydale Saturday. At 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Redsides head out to Irrigon to take on the 2A state runner-ups.
