BUDGET VOLUNTEER: North Wasco County School District is recruiting one community member to serve on the budget committee for a two-year term expiring June 30, 2015. Eligible community members must be qualified voters in the district and may not be an officer, employee or agent of the district.

The budget committee is comprised of seven members appointed by the school board. The committee meets according to statutory guidelines in public meetings that must be announced in advance.

Interested parties may complete an application, available on the district website www.nwasco, or by calling the district office at 541-506-3420 or in person at 3632 W. 10th St., The Dalles.

BINGO BASH: Celebrate the coming New Year by attending the Mid-Columbia Senior Center’s end of the year Bingo Bash on Saturday, Dec. 28. There will be a free dinner featuring pulled pork sandwiches, served between 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. Bingo starts at 6 p.m. with a minimum buy-in of $10.

SASQUATCH REVEALED: The “Sasquatch Revealed” dinner event for Saturday, Dec. 28 is sold out at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center, but an afternoon presentation at 3 p.m. that day has been added to the schedule for those who still wish to hear Dr. Jeff Meldrum, Chris Murphy and Thomas Steenburg. Cost is $15 for non-members, and $10 for members. Space is limited.

FIRE BENEFIT: Arlington Fireman’s Ball dinner, dance and live auction is Saturday, Dec. 28, at 6:30 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. at the Rock Creek Schoolhouse. A tri-tip dinner will be provided by Paradise Rose Chuckwagon. Ticket prices for dinner, dance and one complimentary drink are $25. This event is for the benefit of the Ric and Pam Rosenbalm Fire Fund.

HEALTH COVERAGE: Allison Varga, a representative from Cover Oregon, will be available to provide assistance on Mondays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in The Dalles/Wasco County Public Library meeting room during November and December. She will be answering questions and providing application assistance for health coverage. There is a sign-up sheet at the library for those filling out applications. INDOOR MARKET: The Shaniko schoolhouse will host indoor markets and bazaars every month through March to raise money for school improvements. Events include:

March 1-2 – St. Patrick’s Day Bazaar

COATS NEEDED: As local temperatures have dropped, many school children in the North Wasco County School District are without winter coats to keep them warm. A coat drive is under way to collect as many coats as possible for school children of all ages.

Drop off coats at Windermere/Glenn Taylor Real Estate in The Dalles, or in the lobby of The Dalles Chronicle.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED: Volunteers are needed to knit, crochet shawls and lap robes for cancer patients. Yarn and patterns will be provided. Call Betty at 541-980-0774.

COAT GIVEAWAY: The Salvation Army is offering coats all winter long during business hours for people in need, Monday through Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at their office or thrift store at 623 E. Third St. in The Dalles.

Coats will be given to low-income individuals and families in need of warm coats for the winter.

GENEALOGY MEETS: The Columbia Gorge Genealogical Society meets the second Saturday of each month at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center. The public and guests are welcome. A no-host lunch starts at noon in the Basalt Cafe.
