Redsides loses two on the road
The South Wasco County Redsides suffered a pair of setbacks over the weekend with road losses in Irrigon and Culver Saturday and Monday in non-league girl’s basketball play.
In Monday’s contest against Culver, the Redsides had a few things working in their favor, but the Bulldogs broke open an 18-17 halftime cushion with outputs of 10-6 and 12-8 to pull away late.
“The girls played hard we just made to many errors and missed too many easy shots to win,” said South Wasco County head coach Ron Townsend.
Joy Kelly scored 14 points, Molly Foreaker dropped four and teammates, Roxanne O’Neal and Kyra Shannon, reeled off three-point efforts.
Saturday, the Irrigon Lady Knights took advantage of a slow-starting SWC team with runs of 17-8 and 15-5 to lead 32-13 at halftime.
The Redsides crept closer to a 38-24 deficit after an 11-6 rally in the third frame, but Irrigon finished the contest on a 21-5 run to secure a 30-point win.
“I thought the girls battled well especially considering Zoe Morelli (two points) went down with an injury early in the game,” said SWC head basketball coach Ron Townsend. “The third quarter was one of our best of the season.”
Kelly led her squad with seven points, Foreaker added six and Peggy Espeland poured in four points.
SWC (3-5 overall) hosts Sherman (4-4) at 6 p.m. Friday for the start of Big Sky Conference action.
