TDW gets first win of the season
The Dalles Wahtonka scored their first win of the season Friday in a 60-50 margin over Redmond in the second day of the Holiday Inn Classic Tournament, but now has lost seven of their first eight games after suffering a 52-42 setback to Springfield in the Wilsonville Tournament Saturday.
“I am seeing improvement, but we have yet to put a full game together,” said TDW head coach Bob Townsend. “If we can play with that type of energy for a whole 32 minutes we will be in most games.”
TDW had previously lost 53-48 to Sandy, and dropped a 57-53 decision on Dec. 21.
In the opening game of the Holiday Inn Tournament, TDW lost 78-24, before winning their game against Redmond.
Against Sandy, Zach Nerdin scored 16 points, Steven Bartells added 11 and Austin Wilson checked in with nine points.
When playing Lebanon, TDW erased a 16-11 deficit after one quarter with a 19-9 spurt to lead 30-25 at the break, but Lebanon worked splits of 18-15 and 14-8 in the second half to win by a 57-53 margin.
“It was a back and forth game, with no team leading by more than five points,” Townsend said. “I thought we played hard enough to win, but mental mistakes continue to be an issue. We were up five points with two minutes to go, but had three costly turnovers, and could not get a much needed stop.”
Clay Copper had 12 points, Wilson hammered home 10 points and Bartells poured in nine.
TDW (1-7 overall) hosts Gresham at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
