BUDGET VOLUNTEER: North Wasco County School District is recruiting one community member to serve on the budget committee for a two-year term expiring June 30, 2015. Eligible community members must be qualified voters in the district and may not be an officer, employee or agent of the district.

The budget committee is comprised of seven members appointed by the school board. The committee meets according to statutory guidelines in public meetings that must be announced in advance.

Interested parties may complete an application, available on the district website www.nwasco.k12.or.us, or by calling the district office at 541-506-3420 or in person at 3632 W. 10th St., The Dalles.

January 2

OPEN SWIM: The Aquatic Center in Hood River is holding special open swims Thursday, and Friday from 1 to 3:30 p.m. over the school holiday break. The slide and rope swing with be open and the party room is available for rental. The Aquatic Center will be closed New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

January 4

INDOOR MARKET: The Shaniko schoolhouse will host indoor markets and bazaars every month through March to raise money for school improvements. The events start with the Big Indoor Marketplace Nov. 1 through 10 with videos, new and used books, handmade jewelry, ceramics, natural fibers, history and more. Other events include:

Feb. 1-2 – Valentine Bazaar

March 1-2 – St. Patrick’s Day Bazaar

CASA BRIEFING: Curious about CASA? Attend “CASA 101,” an informal informational session to find out more about CASA and possibly becoming a CASA volunteer Thursday, Jan. 9, 5:15 to 6 p.m., at Planetree Health Resource Center, 200 E. 4th St, The Dalles.

SWIM LESSONS: Swim lesson registration is under way for January classes, starting Jan. 7 and running every Tuesday and Thursday until Jan. 23 at the Hood River Aquatic Center. Classes are for 30 minutes and run between 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. For more information, call 541-386-1303.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED: Volunteers are needed to knit, crochet shawls and lap robes for cancer patients. Yarn and patterns will be provided.

COAT GIVEAWAY: The Salvation Army is offering coats all winter long during business hours for people in need, Monday through Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at their office or thrift store at 623 E. Third St. in The Dalles.

Coats will be given to low-income individuals and families in need of warm coats for the winter.

GENEALOGY MEETS: The Columbia Gorge Genealogical Society meets the second Saturday of each month at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center. The public and guests are welcome. Starts at noon in the Basalt Cafe.
