Faith news in brief, Feb. 1

Seventh Day Adventist

The Dalles Seventh Day Adventist Church presents a free concert at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at 3339 E. 13th St. Lisa Marie Buster will perform, and there will be a worship service beforehand at 11 a.m. Buster gives a three-pronged message: that Jesus has the power to save and will return soon; that a personal relationship with Jesus is the key to overcoming heartache and finding hope; and encouraging everyone to move closer to God by praying daily.

Double Portion

Double Portion, from Saskatchewan Canada, will perform a free concert at Dufur Christian Church on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 6 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 10, at 10 a.m. at Maupin Church.

The five-piece gospel band is made up of one family. The father started the ministry 30 years ago with his sisters. The group has produced 17 albums and has several concert DVDs.

First United Methodist

First United Methodist Church, 301 E 11th St. in The Dalles, is inviting the community to a Feb. 12 Shrove Tuesday pancake supper from 5 to 7 p.m. Donations will be accepted to send youth to a weekend retreat later in the month. Questions, call 541-296-4675.

Gateway Presbyterian

Gateway has 8:30 a.m. traditional and 11 a.m. contemporary services. Pastor Tim Vance will be speaking Sunday.

Friday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. will be a movie night featuring silent short films in the gym.

Middle school youth group meets Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m.

ACTS (elementary age) after school program meets Thursdays from 2:30 to 5 p.m.

High school youth, First Sunday social is Feb. 3 at 6 p.m. at Gateway.

Wednesday evening adult classes run from 6 to 8 p.m. and include women’s and men’s classes and children’s ministries. Parenting TODAY classes are 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. MOPS, for mothers of preschoolers, meets the third Thursday of the month 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

High school youth/

college meeting at Zion Lutheran Church for Teen Community Bible Study Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. There is a semester fee of $20, which covers dinner every Thursday plus a study guide.

Cake Auction

The Last Days of Jesus Easter pageant welcomes anyone with cake-making skills to participate in The Best Cake Contest, Friday, March 1, at 5:30 p.m. at Covenant Christian Church in The Dalles.

Event attendees will vote on the best cake and it is open to the public. Admission is free. The winner will receive a $1,000 award. All cakes will be sold and proceeds will benefit the Last Days of Jesus Easter pageant. Cakes will be judged on appearance and how well they fit with the Bible theme.

At this fun event there will be clam chowder for purchase, a guest speaker, and live and silent auctions. All the net proceeds will benefit the LDJ Easter pageant with the exception of the food sales. The food sales will benefit the Child Evangelism Fellowship located in The Dalles. The cost is $15 per entry; all entrants must complete an entry form and pay by Feb.15. Checks are to be made to FCC with LDJ Cake Contest written in the memo.
