NOAA reports January is colder than normal

— Temperatures at The Dalles airport averaged slightly colder than normal in January, according to preliminary data received by NOAA’s National Weather Service in Pendleton.

The average temperature was 34.2 degrees, 1.2 degrees below normal. High temperatures averaged 39.6 degrees, 1.7 degrees below normal. The highest was 56 degrees Jan. 7. Low temperatures averaged 28.7 degrees, which was 0.8 degrees below normal. The lowest was 18 degrees Jan. 13.

Low temperature was below 32 degrees 23 days of the month. The high temperature stayed below 32 on five days.

Precipitation totaled 0.32 inches during January, which was 2.32 inches below normal. Measurable precipitation — at least .01 inch — was received on 5 days with the heaviest, 0.16 inches reported Jan. 5.

Since October, the water year precipitation at The Dalles airport has been 6.38 inches, which is 1.63 inches below normal.

The highest wind gust was 35 miles per hour on Jan. 10.

The outlook for February from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center is for near-normal temperatures and near-normal precipitation. Normal highs for The Dalles airport during February are 47.8 degrees and normal lows are 32.1 degrees. The 30-year normal precipitation is 1.86 inches.
