The Dalles man struck while crossing freeway

Oregon State Police troopers are continuing the investigation into a Friday evening crash on Interstate 84 that resulted in the injury of a pedestrian.

According to Sergeant Les Kipper, a Toyota van driven by Fadi H. Akoam, 38, from Richland, Wash., was westbound on Interstate 84 near milepost 85 on Feb. 1 about 6:30 p.m.

A man later identified as Loren Judah Harwood, 25, of The Dalles then tried to cross the freeway from the south side to the north side.

He was reportedly struck by the van and transported by LifeFlight to Oregon Health & Science University with life-threatening injuries. He was listed in serious condition by hospital personnel as of press time Tuesday.

The van's driver, adult female passenger and three juvenile-age passengers were not injured, although the vehicle received major damage.

The westbound lanes were closed two hours with a detour in place for traffic to travel through the area. Troopers from The Dalles Area Command office are continuing the investigation into the fatality accident. The Dalles Police Department, Mid-Columbia Fire & Rescue and the Oregon Department of Transportation assisted at the scene.
