CHINOOK SEASON: There will be no spring chinook season on the Deschutes River. Fisheries managers have announced that the popular spring chinook fishery will not open in 2013. Deschutes River Anglers can expect fall chinook season in August.
GENEALOGY MEETS: The Columbia Gorge Genealogical Society meets the second Saturday of each month at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center. The public and guests are welcome. A no-host lunch starts at noon in the Basalt Cafe.

WILD ART: The Columbia Art Gallery in Hood River is looking for artists who have the sense of adventure to explore one of the region’s federally designated wilderness areas. Eighteen artists will be selected for this project by a jury of art professionals. Those chosen will visit one of the following: Indian Heaven, Trapper Creek, Mt. Adams in Washington, and Oregon’s Mark O. Hatfield, Mt. Hood and Badger Creek wilderness areas.
The artist will then create art that represents the spirit of the wilderness. The art will be hung an offered for sale at Columbia Art Gallery in Hood River during August 2014. Applications must be received no later than March 1, 2013.

OPEN CALL: Cascade Singers extends an open call to choral singers. Spring 2013 concerts include Celtic music on St. Patrick’s Day and favorite show tunes on May 31 and June 1.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: The Dalles Meals on Wheels, Inc. is in need of volunteer drivers to deliver hot meals to home-bound clients between 11 a.m. to noon.
Drivers can volunteer one to five days per week or even twice a month. The routes usually go out around 11 a.m. and most routes take about 45 minutes.

AFTER SCHOOL: Thursday afternoons at Sherman Elementary in Grass Valley, a kids’ cooking class was recently added as part of the afterschool program, “Sherman Kids on the Road to Excellence” (SKORE).
Led by OSU Sherman County Extension staff and teen 4-H members, and assisted by a teen employee of the afterschool program, the opportunity to cook has been well-received by enthusiastic youngsters.
The goal of the cooking program is to focus on basic skills to inspire self-sufficiency and self-confidence in the kitchen.
MARKET BOARD: Hood River Saturday Market is accepting applications for new board members.
The organization has operated in Hood River for 23 years. Its focus is to promote local artists, craftsmen and produce vendors in the gorge by hosting a weekly market every Saturday, May through September.
