REIKI CIRCLE: A reiki share-circle is held the second and fourth Mondays of each month at Mid-Columbia Medical Center in the Medical Office Building, starting at 7 p.m. There is no charge and all are welcome.

SPAGHETTI DINNER: The Jerri Walker DePriest Endowment Fund spaghetti dinner is Friday, Jan. 25, from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at Dufur School.

The endowment provides scholarships for Dufur High School graduates.

Dinner admission is $6 for adults, $4 for kids 6-12, free for kids 6 and younger, and $25 per family.

The event coincides with Dufur’s home basketball games against Sherman starting with JV boys at 4:30 p.m., varsity girls at 6 and varsity boys at 7:30.

HUNTER EDUCATION: Registration for hunter education classes is online at https://or.outdoorcentral.us/us/or/license or on the ODFW website, also at point of sale for hunting license locations.

Cost is $10 per student and can be paid online. Classes fill up fast, so early registration is recommended. Class start dates: regular classes Jan. 11 (limit 40), April 5 (limit 20), Home Study July 20 (limit 20).

FREE CLASSES: Have you noticed you’re spending more at the grocery store? Have you noticed that “sale prices” are what used regular prices? OSU Sherman County Extension will be offering several free classes throughout the county in January offering help and ideas for dealing with higher grocer prices: Saturday, Jan. 12, 9 a.m. Extension Office, Moro (new building); Tuesday, Jan. 15, 6 p.m. Community Center, Rufus (before bingo); Wednesday, Jan.16, 9 a.m. The Gift Horse, Wasco; Monday, Jan. 21, 6:30 p.m., Rebekah Hall, Grass Valley.

CRAFTER’S DAY: Ladies Day Out with Scrapbooking/Crafter’s Day is set for Saturday, Jan. 12, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Nazarene Church, 1313 Mt. Hood St., The Dalles.

Table space is for rent with vendor drawings, make ‘n take projects, lunch and snacks. Vendors will be set up too.

Certificates will be available for gift giving. The event benefits the students attending junior and senior conventions with Sonrise Academy. Early Bird discounts are available.

GENEALOGY MEETING: The Columbia Gorge Genealogical Society meets the second Saturday of each month at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center. The public and guests are welcome. A no-host lunch is scheduled for noon in the Basalt Rock Cafe.

Membership is open to all ages and membership applications are available on the main website and the society blog.

Each month the society presents a program geared to enhance genealogical research and aid in the preservation of family history.

ART ENTRIES: The Dalles Art Center will host the 2013 Wasco County Art Exhibit for grades kindergarten through fifth from Jan. 15, through Feb. 2.

Entries will be accepted Tuesday, Jan. 8, through Saturday, Jan. 12. All Wasco County elementary students are encouraged to enter. Only one entry per student is allowed. All types of artwork are acceptable. Pieces should be neatly presented and flatwork must be mounted on poster board or be ready to hang. Closing reception will be Saturday, Feb. 2, from 3 to 4 p.m. Cash awards will be presented at that time.

SWEET ADELINES: Women who love to sing are invited to visit one of Harmony of The Gorge’s open houses Tuesdays during January, 15th, 22nd, 29th from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

The chorus is a part of Sweet Adelines International, a women’s organization dedicated to singing through education and performances. Open houses will be at the Fellowship Hall of Hood River Valley Christian Church. If weather looks questionable, call 509-493-2006 to find out if the rehearsal has been canceled. MEDICAL MARIJUANA: Mothers Against Misuse and Abuse (MAMA) will be hosting two free public presentations in The Dalles on “The Science of Medical Marijuana.” Wayne Haythorn will explain where and how marijuana works in the body. He has been studying this for several years, has attended medical conferences representing MAMA, and has talked with many of the leading researchers in the field.

The presentations will be at: The Dalles-Wasco County Library, at noon, Thursday Jan. 17, or at the PUD building on River Road, at 7 p.m. Wednesday Jan. 23.

January 24

CASA TRAINING: Training for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) will be Jan. 24, beginning in The Dalles.

Columbia Gorge CASA volunteers advocate for the best interests of children in foster care to ensure that their needs are getting met and that they find a permanent home as soon as possible. The 30-hour training involves on-line and in-person components.

CANCER FUNDRAISING: Relay for Life The Dalles Area hosts its kick-off event Thursday, Jan. 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Shilo Inn for the annual American Cancer Society fundraising season, ending with the Relay for Life Event at Sid White Field June 22 and 23.

Money is raised to fund research to fight cancer. The goal is for 40 teams to raise $80,000 by end of 2013.

SUPER AUCTION: The Denim & Diamonds St. Mary’s Academy Super Auction will be Saturday, Feb. 2, at 5 p.m. at 1112 Cherry Heights Road The Dalles. Tickets are available for purchase starting Jan 3, for $35/person. Dinner will be catered by Jim Olheiser of Cowboy Catering. Guests can bid on silent and live auction items.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: The Dalles Meals on Wheels, Inc. is in need of volunteer drivers to deliver hot meals to home-bound clients between 11 a.m. to noon.

Drivers can volunteer one to five days per week or even twice a month. The routes usually go out around 11 a.m. and most routes take about 45 minutes.

RELAY DATES: The year-long annual fund raiser to fight cancer, Relay for life The Dalles area, has been set for Saturday, June 22, and Sunday, June 23, as the dates for their signature main event for 2013, Sid White Field at The Dalles Wahtonka High School West Campus, 3601 West 10th St.
