New Entries

Cascade Singers extends an open call to choral singers. Spring 2013 concerts include Celtic music on St. Patrick’s Day and favorite show tunes on May 31 and June 1.

The regional community choir meets under the leadership of Lloyd Walworth Mondays and Thursdays at 7 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 10th and Union streets in The Dalles. Rehearsals are open to all interested singers.

PORTLAND PLAY: “The Lost Boy” is a dramatic play based on a true story from 1874, in which a boy is snatched and ransomed by down-on-their luck circus performers. A group will travel to see a matinee performance Sunday, Feb. 3, at 2 p.m. An educational discussion with the director directly follows the performance.

January 15

SWEET ADELINES: Women who love to sing are invited to visit one of Harmony of The Gorge’s open houses Tuesdays during January, from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

The chorus is a part of Sweet Adelines International. Open houses will be at the Fellowship Hall of Hood River Valley Christian Church. For information call 509-493-2006.

January 17

MEDICAL MARIJUANA: Mothers Against Misuse and Abuse (MAMA) will be hosting two free public presentations in The Dalles on “The Science of Medical Marijuana.” Wayne Haythorn will explain where and how marijuana works in the body. He has been studying this for several years, has attended medical conferences representing MAMA, and has talked with many of the leading researchers in the field.

The presentations will be at: The Dalles-Wasco County Library, at noon, Thursday Jan. 17, or at the PUD building on River Road, at 7 p.m. Wednesday Jan. 23.

KIWANIS MEETINGS: The Dalles Kiwanis Club program for Jan. 17 is Stephanie Hoppe, major and planned gifts officer at Columbia Gorge Community College.

Jan. 24 is Roger Howe from Mid-Columbia Search and Rescue.

Jan. 31 is club business meeting.

Kiwanis meetings are every Thursday noon at Spooky’s and visitors are welcome.

January 18

CIVIC DANCE: The Daddy Daughter Dance and Mother Son Jammin’ Fun events offer fun times for kids to build relationships with the adults in their life. Mother Son Jammin’ Fun: Jan. 18, 6 to 8 p.m. Daddy Daughter Dance: Feb. 15, 6 to 8 p.m. (Please note the date change of the Daddy Daughter Dance.)

BLAZER GAME: Join the fun as we head to Portland for an exciting basketball game between the Blazers and the Milwaukie Bucks. Wear red and black to support the team. Bring a lunch in the van. QUICKBOOKS: Columbia Gorge Community College offers QuickBooks instruction at The Dalles Campus Building Two, Room 2.106. This class is two full Saturdays held on Jan. 19 and Jan. 26, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The class is taught by Mike DeMott, a certified QuickBooks instructor and one of the Small Business Center’s Business Counselors. Class includes both QuickBooks Fundamentals 2012 and the QuickBooks Payroll Module.

Class fee is $288 and includes two books. Class size is limited to 10 participants.

January 24

CASA TRAINING: Training for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) will be Jan. 24, beginning in The Dalles.

Columbia Gorge CASA volunteers advocate for the best interests of children in foster care to ensure that their needs are getting met and that they find a permanent home as soon as possible. The 30-hour training involves on-line and in-person components.

CANCER FUNDRAISING: Relay for Life The Dalles Area hosts its kick-off event Thursday, Jan. 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Shilo Inn for the annual American Cancer Society fundraising season, ending with the Relay for Life Event at Sid White Field June 22 and 23.

Money is raised to fund research to fight cancer. The goal is for 40 teams to raise $80,000 by end of 2013.


January 25

SPAGHETTI DINNER: The Jerri Walker DePriest Endowment Fund spaghetti dinner is Friday, Jan. 25, from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at Dufur School.

The endowment provides scholarships for Dufur High School graduates.

Dinner admission is $6 for adults, $4 for kids 6-12, free for kids 6 and younger, and $25 per family.

The event coincides with Dufur’s home basketball games against Sherman starting with JV boys at 4:30 p.m., varsity girls at 6 and varsity boys at 7:30.

February 2

SUPER AUCTION: The Denim & Diamonds St. Mary’s Academy Super Auction will be Saturday, Feb. 2, at 5 p.m. at 1112 Cherry Heights Road The Dalles. Tickets are available for purchase starting Jan 3, for $35/person. Dinner will be catered by Jim Olheiser of Cowboy Catering. Guests can bid on silent and live auction items.

April 27

CAR SHOW: The KODL Car Show will be Saturday, April 27, part of the Northwest Cherry Festival.

Entrants compete for trophies and plaques. All entrants receive dash plates and gift bags. Awards will be handed out Saturday at 3 p.m.

REIKI CIRCLE: A reiki share-circle is held the second and fourth Mondays of each month at Mid-Columbia Medical Center in conference room (new location) starting at 7 p.m. There is no charge and all are welcome.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: The Dalles Meals on Wheels, Inc. is in need of volunteer drivers to deliver hot meals to home-bound clients between 11 a.m. to noon.

Drivers can volunteer one to five days per week or even twice a month. The routes usually go out around 11 a.m. and most routes take about 45 minutes.

KNITTING GROUPS: Knitting groups meet in the libraries in both Dufur and The Dalles. All are invited to join. Crocheters are also welcome.

The Dalles Knitting Group meets Wednesdays from about 6:30 p.m., until about 8. The Dufur Knitting Club meets Thursdays, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

RELAY DATES: The year-long annual fundraiser to fight cancer, Relay for Life The Dalles area, has been set for Saturday, June 22, and Sunday, June 23, as the dates for their signature main event for 2013, Sid White Field at The Dalles Wahtonka High School West Campus, 3601 West 10th St.
