White River Falls near Tygh Valley claimed the life of another swimmer this weekend.
Wasco County Sheriff’s officers responded to the falls Saturday, June 29, on a drowning report and were led to the lower portion of White River Falls where the body of Corey Loeliger Myers, 30, was found.
“That’s a dangerous feature,” said Chief Deputy Lane Magill. “It’s right where the other two kids died last year, or close to it. The pool is right below what we call the powerhouse. He jumped in and got sucked under with the extreme current.” According to the report. Myers’ girlfriend tried to rescue him, but was unsuccessful.
Myers’ death marks the fifth at that site in four years. “It’s bad,” Magill said. “As a matter of fact, I think we’re going to potentially sit down with Oregon State Parks. There’s signage at the top part, but we’re going to coordinate a meeting with state parks to cordon it off. It’s so dangerous. People just go in there and they die.”
Myers was not wearing a life jacket, Magill said.
