Firefighters contain Owyhee
PORTLAND (AP) — Firefighters in Eastern Oregon have containment lines around most of a big fire that lightning ignited earlier this week near the Owyhee Dam in Malheur County.
Fire spokeswoman Virginia Gibbons said Friday the fire hasn’t been acting up, and favorable weather is expected: cooler with little chance of thunderstorms.
The fire spread through more than 46,000 acres of grass and sagebrush — about 70 square miles. No structure damage was reported.
One member of the crew tending the firefighting camp suffered heat exhaustion.
The state park at the dam remains closed except for primitive camping. The electricity is off.
Other Eastern Oregon wildfires touched off earlier this week by lightning have been contained, or are nearly contained.
