COUNTRY HOEDOWN: The American Legion in The Dalles will host a Country Hoedown July 12 and 13, at 8 p.m. Entertainment includes country music and karaoke by Dean. The Legion also has pool, shuffleboard and air hockey, all free. For more information call 541-296-9633.
SOCK HOP: The Eagles host a sock hop Saturday, July 13, at 7 p.m. as part of the organization’s open house membership drive.

REPTILE MAN: Richard Ritchey will be at The Dalles-Wasco County Library Tuesday, July 16, at 11 a.m., as part of the summer reading program’s “Dig Into Reading,” sponsored by The Dalles Kiwanis.
Ritchey brings a wide range of reptiles from the 12-foot king cobra to small snakes and lizards up close and personal.

JEWELRY SALE: PEO Chapter Q hosts a Jammin’ July jewelry sale, Saturday, July 13, from 5 to 10 p.m. at 415 East Second St. (between Laughlin and Federal). The event supports education scholarships for women.
Pre-owned jewelry has been donated for the benefit of raising money for educational scholarships for women. Most of the jewelry costs less than $5. Help support these scholarships by purchasing jewelry from PEO Chapter Q.
SUNDAY RIDES: Monthly social bike rides are planned through September. The rides are every second Sunday, July 14, Aug. 11 and Sept. 8, starting at 7 p.m. at The Dalles City Park. The rides are described as a “flat, slow, fun and easy” half-hour loop.
PIONEER CAMP: There’s still time to sign up for 4-H Pioneer Day Camp. Kids in grades three through five will have a chance to live, work and play as people did in the time before technology. How did children live? What did they do without computers? What did they do for fun? Campers will be transported back in time and live the life of a pioneer.
Camp will be July 15 through 17, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Fort Dalles Museum. Cost is $25 per child.

HISTORY PROGRAMS: The Summer History Programs at the Rorick House continue for the months of July and August. The Rorick House is at 300 W. 13th Street in The Dalles. It is open for visitors from noon to 4 p.m. each Saturday and Sunday during July and August.

FULL-YEAR SCHOLARSHIP: The 2013-14 Columbia Gorge Community College full-year foundation scholarship application is now available. Any Mid-Columbia resident may apply. Recipients may be awarded up to 12 credits per term, which can only be used at Columbia Gorge Community College. LEADERSHIP SEMINARS: Beginning in April, Columbia Gorge Community College will offer a series of leadership seminars. Participants may choose the entire nine-month series or take individual seminars. Class dates are August 13, Sept. 10, Oct. 8, Nov. 12, and Dec. 10.

FARMERS MARKET: The Dalles Farmers Market is now open every Saturday through Oct. 13 and will launch its Wednesday evening market starting June 12 from 4 to 7 p.m.
In addition to the Farmers Market vendors, several musicians have been booked to participate. The market is also adding a limited number of local artisan booths this year.
Items typically available at the market include salad greens, fresh flowers, farm-fresh eggs, locally produced USDA meats, fresh vegetables and fruits, locally produced honey, jams, jellies and other processed items produced in approved commercial kitchens or under Oregon Department of Agriculture rules.

SOIL TESTING: OSU Wasco County Master Gardeners now offer soil testing every week through October 2013. Garden soil will be tested for nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, pH, humus, and texture.
