Wasco County Fair will have 2014 queen tryouts

The Wasco County Fair will have tryouts for the 2014 queen Thursday, Aug. 15, at 5 p.m., in the rodeo arena at the Wasco County Fairgrounds in Tygh Valley.

The queen will make several appearances as representative of the Wasco County Fair for 2014. Attendance is mandatory for Wasco County events. Contestants will be judged on speaking ability, fair and rodeo knowledge, personality and appearance; i.e., appearance of horse, appropriate tack (50 percent of total), horsemanship (30 percent run-out and 20 percent pattern).

Girls must be unmarried (have never been married and have no children), a resident of Wasco County for the previous six months, or attend a Wasco County school, be 15 to 21 years of age at the time of tryouts, and have not previously served as Wasco County Fair queen. For the tryouts, girls must wear suitable costume, including a long-sleeved shirt and Western hat.

All contestants must use their own horse or provide a lease for the horse they intend to use during tryout and reign as queen. Each girl will furnish transportation for herself and her horse to each show, parade, rodeo or other event. The queen must be chaperoned at all events by a parent, guardian or chaperone approved by the fair board or queen coordinators.

The queen will be furnished $500 for a suitable wardrobe by the Wasco County Fair Baord. If at any time the board discovers that the queen misrepresented herself, she will be disqualified and will forfeit all the clothes the fair board has furnished her and shall reimburse the fair board for any other monies. The first runner-up will take her place.

For queen applications, contact Mary Jo Larsen, 541-296-5626.
