To the editor:
“Wow, what a surprise!” That was my initial reaction when I learned July 22 that a huge annual summer event in The Dalles, the Ted Walker Invitational Swim Meet, was cancelled.
I called the Ted Walker Pool and asked an attendant who worked there about the meet schedule. I was informed about the reason for the unfortunate cancellation of this highly popular summertime activity. The Dalles Dolphins Swim Team has a new board of directors. They decided that because of their lack of experience in holding an event of this magnitude they were simply unable to organize the meet.
Sounds like a pretty lame excuse to me. If I were one of the six board members, I would certainly feel ashamed about this unprecedented scenario.
On the team’s Internet website a statement reads as follows: “TDST strives to carry on the spirit and tradition created by Ted Walker.” That spirit and tradition is obviously nonexistent with the current leadership group of the swim team.
I wonder if they‘ll also have a similar lackluster effort in the very important upcoming fall election. Can they even be counted on to support the November ballot measure that the Northern Wasco County Parks and Recreation District is seeking to get voter approval for a new pool?
Or will they strike out again and say they’re unsure if they can handle that type of pressure situation?
