FULL-YEAR SCHOLARSHIP: The 2013-14 Columbia Gorge Community College full-year foundation scholarship application is now available. Any Mid-Columbia resident may apply. Recipients may be awarded up to 12 credits per term, which can only be used at Columbia Gorge Community College. Applications can be picked up in the Student Services department at The Dalles or Hood River campus, as well as online at http://cgcc. us/financial-aid/scholarships.
Applications must be hand-delivered to either The Dalles or Hood River Student Services no later than noon, Thursday, Aug. 8.

FARMERS MARKET: The Dalles Farmers Market is now open every Saturday through Oct. 13 and will launch its Wednesday evening market starting June 12 from 4 to 7 p.m.
In addition to the Farmers Market vendors, several musicians have been booked to participate. The market is also adding a limited number of local artisan booths this year.

BARBECUE FUNDRAISER: The Dufur Historical Society hosts a barbecue fundraiser Saturday, June 8, at the Dufur Living History Museum grounds.
Dinner, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. features a menu of hamburger or chicken, salad, beans, drink and dessert is $7.50, a hot dog with the same side dishes is $5, hamburger only $3.50, hotdog only is $2. It will be accompanied by live music from Tom Graff. A speaking and picture presentation of the Great Southern Railroad by Jerry Tanquist will follow.
The museum will be open for visitors from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
POOL OPENING: Ted Walker Memorial Swimming Pool opens for its full summer season starting June 8 through Labor Day.
Activities will include: swim lessons (group, semi-private, or private), lap swim, open swim sessions, and the new splash and slam pool basketball. The pool is also available for party rental.

SUMMER HOURS: The Wasco County Historical Society announces the opening of the Rorick House for the summer season.
The House will be open Saturdays and Sundays during June, July and August, beginning June, 1. The Rorick House, at 300 W. 13th St. in The Dalles, was the home of Eck and May Rorick for 50 years.
The Historical Society will again sponsor a series of summer history programs:
June 8- Jean Vercouteren will follow up on her History of Celilo Village.
June 22- Caroline Wood will tell about the restoration and preservation of the Historic Columbia River Highway.
July 6- Jerry Tanquist will talk about the Railroad race along the Deschutes River.
July 20- John Lundell’s history of One Room Schools in this area.
SUNDAY RIDES: Monthly social bike rides are planned through September. The rides are every second Sunday, June 9, July 14, Aug. 11 and Sept. 8, starting at 7 p.m. at The Dalles City Park.
The rides are described as a “flat, slow, fun and easy” half-hour loop.
LEADERSHIP SEMINARS: Beginning in April, Columbia Gorge Community College will offer a series of leadership seminars. Participants may choose the entire nine-month series or take individual seminars. Class dates are June 11, July 9, August 13, Sept. 10, Oct. 8, Nov. 12, and Dec. 10.
All classes will be at the Hood River Indian Creek Campus, 8:30 a.m. to12:30 p.m. The cost is $659 for the series or $89 per seminar. Pre registration is required by calling the college at 541-506-6011or online at www.cgcc.cc.or.us
FIELD DAY: The Sherman Experiment Station field day is planned for Wednesday, June 12. Oregon State University and USDA Agricultural Research Service are co-hosting this field day for the agricultural community. Anyone with an interest in agriculture is encouraged to attend.
Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. at the Sherman County Fairground. The program will begin at 8 a.m. with an address from a representative of OSU’s College of Agricultural Sciences. Field tours will begin at 8:25 a.m. The fairgrounds are one mile south of Moro on Lonerock Road.
A naming dedication will take place at the new building 11:30 a.m. to honor the contributions of Steve Burnet, who was instrumental in its construction. A hosted lunch is provided at 12:00 noon. READING PROGRAM: The Dalles-Wasco County Public Library and The Dalles Kiwanis sponsor the summer reading program June 17 through Aug. 20. Sign up is under way for three different age levels.
For grades K-3, the theme is “Dig into Reading,” Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to noon. June 18, will kick off the season with the comedy magic and ventriloquism of Steve Taylor and Rudy O’Riley.
For grades 4-8, the theme is “Beneath the Surface,” Thursdays from 2 to 3 p.m.
June 20, will start off with a Hobbit party. Dress up as your favorite character and play hobbit trivia, food and surprises.
For high school age, the theme is “Ground Breaking Reads,” Monday nights at 6:30 p.m. beginning June 17. The high school program will include a book club, concerts, zombie walk and more.

EXCHANGE FAMILIES: AFS is seeking host families for exchange students. Students arrive in August and stay for 10 months.
The sooner applications are completed, the more students host families have to choose from and the better chance to find a student who best fits with family habits, interests and activities.
The Dalles Wahtonka accepts up to three exchange students, while Hood River Valley High School accepts one. Dufur would also like to have an exchange student.

SOIL TESTING: OSU Wasco County Master Gardeners now offer soil testing every week through October 2013. Garden soil will be tested for nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, pH, humus, and texture.
