Music in the Park looks for community support

The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce is planning to host the “Music in the Park” event on Wednesday, June 12 at the Lewis and Clark Festival Park located at West 1st St, The Dalles, but a lack of sponsors could cause the event to be cancelled.

The free event is from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. The festivities will be kicked off by Geno Michaels & SOULCITY.

A staple summertime tradition in The Dalles, the Chamber’s Music in the Park series will also feature concerts July 17 and August 14, with each event beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The Chamber is looking at having a regional/local flavor of musical groups and hopes to have a few more vendors at the park, most notably food and craft vendors.

Lisa Farquharson, CEO and president of The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce, said with the first concert coming so soon, finding enough sponsors is essential.

“Continuing the tradition is vital and this event needs sponsors to make it happen... We need to pay the bands, pay for publicity and promotional efforts and pay a variety of fees associated with planning and throwing an outdoor event for the community,” Farquharson said.

She said without an increase in sponsorships for the "Music in the Park" series there is a great likelihood that the June 12th event may be canceled. Sponsorships for the program range from $100-$1000.

Geno Michaels & SOULCITY are a seven-piece group performing classic and contemporary soul and R&B based out of Portland. They have entertained audiences at a number of Pacific Northwest festivals, special events and regional clubs.
