Spring workouts for athletes taking place

Training for Success preparation is here for the upcoming football season.

This training program aims to help players get in better shape with increased agility and strength.

“I think this is a really good thing we have going here,” said junior football player Blake Diede. “We had this program last year and I hope this year that it really takes off. We have a really big junior class (they will be seniors this fall) and a lot of those guys have been waiting to work. This is when the hard work starts – Right now.”

The goal for Training for Success is to start a program designed to allow the interaction of all youth who play sports in The Dalles to become better, stronger, faster, and athletes that are more confident.

From what started as plan between Ron Diede and his son Blake, the aim is set towards developing a workout regimen, at no cost to the athletes, to prepare them for their upcoming sports. There is a core group of dedicated athletes in place with players ranging from high school to middle school and elementary school – there could always be larger numbers attending though.

“It is pretty important that we start showing more dedication to each other,” said incoming senior Zach Cantrell. “If you don’t have the players, you are not going to be that good. No matter how good a certain core group is, you are still going to need other people to help you out and make you want to go try harder and do better.”

The Training for Success group meets up at the weight room on some days and Amaton Field.

They will work in plyometrics, 40-yard dash, agility drills, broad jump, cone drills and flex boxes in what is what the National Football League orchestrates during its annual combine.

For now, the program is starting out twice a week at Kurtz Gym on the campus of The Dalles Wahtonka High School, but there are plans to increase the amount of days to three, most likely a Tuesday.

For now, every Thursday, the group meets from 6:30-8 p.m., and on Sundays, the workout times run from 1-3 p.m.
