The Spring Food Drive is underway on behalf of Mid-Columbia Community Action Council sponsored by Relay For Life The Dalles Area.
Each year, Relay presents their luminaria ceremony at the annual event in June. This ceremony is to remember those lost to cancer and honor those who have survived. The moving tribute will be held this year at The Dalles Wahtonka High School west campus track at 10 p.m. Saturday, June 22.
Lighted Luminaria paper bags will be anchored with canned food to hold them in place against the gorge winds. In past years the anchor had been sand or stones. Now Relayers use canned food, then donate the food to the local food bank through Mid-Columbia Community Action Council. This will mark the second year of the food drive.
“We are delighted to be working with Relay For Life of The Dalles Area on the Spring Food Drive again,” said to Janeal Booren, CACFP and RFB coordinator. Booren is also team development co-chair this year for Relay For Life. “We need canned food right now and many local merchants are helping with placement of food drop barrels. One thousand cans are needed for the luminaria ceremony.”
Relay canned food drop barrels are located at: Moose Lodge, Bi-Mart, Walgreen Drug Store, Shari’s, Dinty’s Market West, Allen’s Food Center, Mid Columbia Fire and Rescue, Coastal Farm and Ranch and Mid Columbia Senior Center.
Food drop barrels can be obtained by calling Janeal at 541-298-5131.
