Surfing with Sea Lions

WINDSURFER Katie Burns, left, pictured with her brother, Billy Burns, had a close encounter with a sea lion over the weekend. “I was sailing out to the island and hit a sea lion with the nose of my board,” she said. “I fell in the water and he (or she) came up to my board and started hitting it with his snout. I tried to keep my board between me and the lion. When he swam under my board, I climbed on top and sailed away.” Katie said she was scared at first and didn’t know how the mammals would act. She took a break from sailing but was back in the water later in the day.
