In the past 13 days, The Dalles Little League 10U All-Star head coach Greg Cummings has seen his club make progressive gains of eye-opening proportions.

All of the coaching and preparations have been done, now they will see how much that attention to detail plays out this next week in Bend.

“I am really impressed with this group of kids,” Cummings said. “They have shown a lot of heart, determination and a lot of drive. At every practice in the last two weeks, the kids have gotten better and better. They are hitting the ball better and better and they are playing defense better and better.”

Led by the Minors classification’s Most Valuable Player, Trenton Schacher, and Gold Glove recipient, Conner Cummings, the Stars can stroll onto any field and give the opposition a cause to pause.

The consensus thought is that there are speed demons littered in the lineup led by Isaac Anthony as well as the power of Taylor Beeks, Taylor Routson, Schacher and Jake Dollarhide.

Caleb Nelson, Colin Shubert, Jaxon Pullen, Spencer Guscette and Mathew Chudek cannot be overlooked by any means, as potential difference makers.

“We are really good at hitting the ball,” Beeks said. “Pitchers, we’ve got that down. We have eight pitchers on our team. I think our fielding is doing pretty good. We just need to work on a few more things.”

All but one player is new to the tense environment of Bend and the high profile games to be played over the next seven days.

“We want to win,” Conner Cummings said. “I am really confident we can do it. All of us are good, we are good hitters and we have heart.”

During these few practices, Coach Cummings said the team’s hitting prowess has made him smile.

It could put his team above the ranks.

He added that as long they can put the bat on the ball, play great defense and have the will to succeed, they would be fine.

“We need to focus,” Beeks said. “I heard Bend is a pretty hard team to play, so we need to stay focused. The little things count and we learned that in practice tonight (Wednesday).”

The 10U all-star baseball team kicks off double elimination tournament action at 2 p.m. Sunday versus the winner of Saturday’s matchup between Sisters and Bend North.
