STORY TIME: The Dalles-Wasco County Public Library offers Toddler Time for ages 18 months to 3 years every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Preschool story time, for ages 3 to 6 years, is offered every Friday at 10:30 a.m.

Story time provides children with an early group experience that may include great books, songs, finger plays, movement activities, crafts, surprises, special guests and lots of fun.

CANDIDATES NEEDED: The filing deadline to be a candidate for the upcoming May 21, 2013, special district election is March 21, at 5 p.m.

A number of positions still have no candidates filed, including positions on various school boards, fire boards, utility districts, park districts, The Dalles port district, and the White River health district.

WIDOWS MEETING: The next meeting of the Widows of Veterans Gathering & Support Group will be Tuesday, March 12, at 11 a.m. at the Veteran Services Office in The Dalles.

These gatherings are an opportunity for grief support and ensuring that widows of veterans are aware of and accessing all the support available from the Veteran Services.

SPRING LECTURE: Join nurse midwives Ann Becker, RN, MN, CNM, director of First Impressions at MCMC, and Mandelynn Morgan, CNM at Columbia River Women’s Clinic, along with Christina Castellano, PT, DPT, director of Outpatient Therapy at Water’s Edge as they lead the discussion about the latest for a healthy pregnancy, birth experience, and post-delivery recovery Tuesday, March 12, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

ART CLASS: An Introduction to Watercolor will be the first in a series of creative arts classes held at the Mid-Columbia Senior Center on Tuesday, March 12, from 1 to 2 p.m. All supplies are provided. Fee is $2.

OPEN WORKSHOP: Learn how to search for free resources for professional or practical purposes in a presentation by Michal Kawka, a career and technical education adviser at Columbia Gorge Community College. The event will be at The Dalles-Wasco County Public Library Thursday, March 14, from 7 to 8 p.m. Basic computer skills required.

ANNUAL CONCERT: “St. Paddy’s for St. Peter’s,” the annual St. Patrick’s Day concert at St. Peter’s Landmark, takes place Sunday, Mar. 17, at 3 p.m. A children’s choir and instrumentalists will join Cascade Singers choir, ensemble, and “Almost-All-Irish-Almost All-Brass Band” for Irish favorites and sing-alongs. Admission is a free-will offering to benefit St. Peter’s Landmark, located at 3rd and Lincoln Streets in The Dalles.

PIRATE CARNIVAL: The seventh annual Pirate Carnival is set for Sunday, March 17, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Klickitat School Gym in Klickitat, Wash. Admission is free. A costume contest for kids and adults is planned. Other activities include a silent auction, activities and games, a haunted pirate cove and food including clam chowder and rootbeer floats.

WHEELS MARCH: The Dalles Meals on Wheels is having a March for Meals event March 21, from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. They are asking everyone including high school kids to March around the MOW building to bring awareness to senior and all hunger in the local area.

EGG HUNT: Flagstone’s Annual Easter Egg Hunt and BBQ will be at 11:15 a.m. Saturday, March 30. The community is invited to bring the kids, grandkids and great grandkids for some Easter fun and lunch. Festivities include a free barbecue at noon, games, carrot carving contest, and prizes. The Egg Hunt is for ages birth to 12. Please bring your own basket.

SUNRISE SERVICE: The Masonic Lodge and The Mid Columbia Fellowship of Churches invite the whole community to the 89the year of Sunrise Services at Pulpit Rock on Easter morning. The services will start at 6:30 a.m., rain or shine.

The Lutheran Intern serving The First United Methodist Church will deliver the sermon.

CAR SHOW: The KODL Car Show will be Saturday, April 27, part of the Northwest Cherry Festival.

Entrants compete for trophies and plaques. All entrants receive dash plates and gift bags. Awards will be handed out Saturday at 3 p.m.

AFTER SCHOOL: Thursday afternoons at Sherman Elementary in Grass Valley, a kids’ cooking class was recently added as part of the afterschool program, “Sherman Kids on the Road to Excellence” (SKORE).

Led by OSU Sherman County Extension staff and teen 4-H members, and assisted by a teen employee of the afterschool program, the opportunity to cook has been well-received by enthusiastic youngsters.

The goal of the cooking program is to focus on basic skills to inspire self-sufficiency and self-confidence in the kitchen.

HEAD START: Mid-Columbia Children’s Council is now accepting applications for the Early Head Start program, which serves pregnant women and children from birth to 3 years old. Mid-Columbia Children’s Council’s Head Start and Early Head Start programs are free. GENEALOGY MEETS: The Columbia Gorge Genealogical Society meets the second Saturday of each month at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center. The public and guests are welcome. A no-host lunch starts at noon in the Basalt Cafe.

MOBILE LIBRARY: The Dalles-Wasco County Library now offers a mobile app for patrons.

The new app, WascoCoLib, allows patrons to check their account, renew books, review requests and holds, search the library catalog, log onto LibraryToGo for e-books and e-audio, get library locations and directions and connect with the library on Facebook using their mobile devices.

RELAY DATES: The year-long annual fundraiser to fight cancer, Relay for Life The Dalles area, has been set for Saturday, June 22, and Sunday, June 23, as the dates for their signature main event for 2013, Sid White Field at The Dalles Wahtonka High School West Campus, 3601 West 10th St.
