The Dalles Ditch fluoride
To the editor:
I suggested to The Dalles City Council in a meeting dated Feb. 11 in the Audience Participation segment of the meeting that I would like the City Council to consider ending the practice of adding fluoride to The Dalles City water supply. My reason for doing so is in line of my recently becoming more aware of the potential health hazards associated with the systemic introduction of such a toxic substance into the living human body.
That and of the ethics of one group mandating to the objection of another the introduction to our drinking water of a controversial nutrient or supplement or drug or any other unnecessary substance or sustenance.
It is not my intention in this letter to present evidence in support of my position. I will try to do that later if there is any interest. I would rather know how much, if any, support my proposal may have in the community and if there would be any willing to stand with me?
I would also hope to stir others up to do some independent research on the subject. In doing research, please go beyond the possible dental benefit of fluoride and look into the often overlooked medical and mental hazards associated with residual effects resulting from the long-time ingestion of fluoride.
Consider the ethics and constitutionality of such a mandate as well. How do you feel about this decision being made for you? Do you have the right or responsibility to make health decisions for another? Fluoride can be added to your dental health program if you choose by dental treatment and by the use of fluoridated toothpaste.
On the other hand it is very difficult, near impossible, to remove fluoride from tap water. Really, isn’t clean, pure drinking water all we expect and want from our cities’ tap or fountain?
City Manager Nolan Young says the staff has been reviewing the information I presented regarding the removal of fluoride treatment from the city’s water system. He said due to the number of meetings scheduled for April, staff would be postponing this discussion until a meeting in May. I believe a Town Hall Meeting might also be in the works for May as well. I will keep you posted as I become aware of specific dates and I hope you will plan to attend with me.
