Time to remove studded tires

The Oregon Department of Transportation is reminding motorists to remove their studded tires by Sunday, March 31.

Given the current weather forecasts, ODOT does not plan to extend the Oregon studded tire season. ODOT encourages motorists not to wait until the deadline unless they are driving in snow between now and then.

The state departments of transportation in Oregon and Washington are coordinating studded tire season closing dates to make travel rules consistent.

ODOT encourages people to consider other types of traction tires or chains.

A study completed in 2000 concluded studded tires cause at least $40 million damage each year on roadways within the state.

Other types of traction tires are available that meet Rubber Manufacturers Association standards for use in bad weather.
