To the editor:
It was summertime in The Dalles. 1966. Some of my friends in the neighborhood had come over to have a sleep out in our back yard. We really didn’t need sleeping bags. The thermometer had topped out at 112 degrees that afternoon and it was still in the mid 90’s even though it was 9:30 at night. We couldn’t sleep so we watched stars, told stories, and made plans to be at the Nat before it even opened so we could be the first ones in the pool. The bright cool waters of The Dalles Natatorium were our refuge from the heat and our summer social center. The Nat was the best thing about The Dalles in the summer. Our parents all would have agreed. But that was nearly a half century ago. We’ve been operating that tired old Natatorium on borrowed time. We now have the opportunity to vote for a very reasonable and well planned facility.
Don’t miss your opportunity to exercise some civic pride. Please vote yes for the new pool. The Dalles without a public swimming pool? Unthinkable!
The Dalles with a new, exciting, clean, safe, attractive, and fun swimming pool? Cool!
