Pool bond passes with 20 percent margin

— With fewer than 150 ballots left to count, Measure 33-80 to replace The Dalles' public swimming pool is passing 60 percent to 40 percent at the polls.

The wide margin eliminates the possibility of a late lead change, so the measure has passed.

Pool supporters exchanged hugs and shed tears at the Wasco County Courthouse on the news of the large lead.

"Delighted," said Scott Green, executive director of Northern Wasco County Parks and Recreation District. "Ecstatic. A lot of work went into this by the people in this room, and a lot of people outside this room, too.

"We know the pool we have isn't going to be functional much longer, so this is huge for the community."

Final results won't be out for hours, said Linda Brown, Wasco County Clerk, whose office received a large influx of late ballots.

Finally! Great news. Tired of driving 2 hours to Pendleton and 2 hours back, or down south to the overcrowded Indian casino pool.

Hopefully the final architectural design and quality of build will be highly competent, so The Dalles ends up with a quality and neat (not just bare bones) pool that we can be proud of.
