Portland to host indoor track championships

MONTE CARLO, Monaco (AP) — Portland, has been chosen to host the 2016 World Indoor Track Championships.

That marks the first time a senior World Athletics Series event has been held in the United States since the World Cross Country Championships in 1992.

Eugene will host the 2014 World Junior Championships.

Track and field’s governing body on Friday also awarded the 2018 world indoors to Birmingham, England, after it was beaten for 2016 rights.

Portland’s organizing committee plans to create a temporary track at the Oregon Convention Center for the three-day meet in March of 2016.

The United States last held a senior track and field world championship in 1987, when Indianapolis staged the event. Birmingham hosted the world indoors in 2003. The next world indoors will be in March in Sopot, Poland.
