The body of an unknown woman was found in the Columbia River near The Dalles Dam on Tuesday and authorities believe she had been in the water for a “period of time.”
Wasco County Chief Deputy Lane Magill said Army Corps of Engineers personnel notified the agency about the discovery next to the Oregon shoreline about 12:23 p.m. Nov. 25.
Deputies converged on the scene below the guard shack near Exit 88 and recovered the remains, which were transported to the Spencer Libby and Powell funeral home in The Dalles.
Magill said the state medical examiner’s office will perform an autopsy today and he is hopeful that forensic science will reveal the woman’s identity and whether the death was accidental, a suicide or a homicide.
“Hopefully, we’ll know who she is,” he said. “We don’t have any answers yet about how she died.”
He said the woman appeared to be 20-40 years old but declined to provide further physical details during a Tuesday afternoon telephone interview.
Families with someone missing who have not filed a report are asked to call the sheriff’s office at 541-506-2580.
