September weather among wettest

Rainfall during September reached the third-highest total on record for The Dalles area, according to the National Weather Service office in Pendleton.

Precipitation totaled 1.56 inches during September, which was 1.03 inches above normal. Measurable precipitation — at least .01 inch — was received on nine days with the heaviest, 0.40 inches reported on the 28th. The wettest was 1.68 inches in September 1985.

Temperatures at The Dalles airport averaged slightly warmer than normal during September.

Precipitation this year has reached 6.67 inches. Since October 2012, the water year precipitation at The Dalles airport has been 12.73 inches, which is 7.20 inches above normal.

The average temperature in September was 67.9 degrees, 1.9 degrees above normal. High temperatures averaged 79.6 degrees, 1.1 degrees below normal. The highest was 99 degrees on the 11th.

Low temperatures averaged 56.2 degrees, 4.8 degrees above normal. The lowest was 44 degrees, on the 19th.

On 6 days, the temperature exceeded 90 degrees.

The highest wind gust was 49 mph which occurred on the 15th.

The outlook for October from NOAA's Climate Prediction Center calls for near normal temperatures and near to above normal precipitation. Normal highs for The Dalles airport fall from 75.0 degrees at the start of October to 59.0 degrees at the end of October. Normal lows fall from 47.0 degrees to 39.0 degrees.
