The Dalles North Wasco County School District 21 approved a charter Sept. 26 for the committee that will make recommendations for a new high school mascot.
After Governor Kitzhaber vetoed Senate Bill 215 (which allowed schools to retain mascots that reference Native American cultures if a written agreement is in place) earlier this year, the board agreed to establish a committee for the purpose of choosing a new mascot.
As dictated by the charter, committee membership will include ASB officers from The Dalles Wahtonka and The Dalles Middle Schools, as well as teachers and administrators from both institutions. The committee will decide whether school colors will change for The Dalles Wahtonka — soon to be The Dalles High School again — with the selection of the new mascot and, if so, what those colors will be.
A name, logo and description of the proposed replacement must be included in the committee’s final decision.
In a discussion of parameters, the charter states that it will “seek input from those who will be affected by the decision including elementary school students, and ensure that the process is communicated openly.” The charter states that all final committee decisions should be presented to the school board by Dec. 12.
