Mullins heads to Spain as LDS missionary

— The Dalles Wahtonka graduate Nate Mullins is headed to Madrid, Spain to serve as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Mullins will be one of several missionaries who are currently serving from The Dalles, including his older brother, Rhett, who will soon be returning from Brazil.

Mullins leaves Oct. 16 for the Missionary Training Center in Madrid, where he will learn Spanish. He said he took two years of Spanish classes in high school but “didn’t learn very much,” so he is nervous about trying to teach in Spanish.

“But I know the Lord will bless me,” he said.

Mullins said he has been preparing for his mission by learning to cook and clean, studying church doctrine and working as a janitor at the Discovery Center to earn money to help pay his bills in Spain.

“I have been going out with the missionaries that are serving in The Dalles,” he said. “It is very helpful because it puts me in the same situations that I will be put into in Spain.”

Those situations include knocking on doors, talking to people on the streets about their beliefs, teaching his faith to those who are interested and performing service.

As part of a recently announced program, Mullins will also be part of the first wave of LDS missionaries to use Facebook to spread the gospel during slow times of the day.

Mullins said dedicating two years of his life to teaching people about his beliefs might seem like a big sacrifice, but to him it isn’t.

“The Lord has blessed me so much, the least I can do is give up two years of service to him,” Mullins said.

Mullins is an Eagle Scout and participated in cross country, wrestling and track in high school.
