RELAY MEETING: Relay for Life’s first organizational steering committee meeting will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, in the Fireside Room at the Civic Auditorium. Light snacks will be provided.

DEMOCRAT MEETING: Oct. 8, 7 p.m. Wasco County Library meeting room. Wasco County Democrats, Lousie Langheinrich and Chuck Covert will present information about the Main Street project. Mr. Covert also serves on the commission studying the needs of the Wasco County Roads Department. If you have questions about either of these issues, they will be able to help answer them.

October 9

GLASS FUSING: A course in beginning glass fusing and advanced studies for the returning students will be taught in October at The Dalles Art Center. Students should bring safety glasses and wear closed-toed shoes for safety. Those with glass tools should bring them, all students should bring a sketch pad or note paper and pencil or pen. Classes will be Wednesdays, Oct. 9, 16, 23, 30 at The Dalles Art Center, 220 E. 4th St. from 6 to 9 p.m. Cost is $140 for class, $60 for supplies. Minimum 6, maximum 12 students, must pay at time of sign up.

October 10

KIWANIS PROGRAMS: The Dalles Kiwanis Club meets every Thursday noon at Spooky’s. Visitors are welcome.

October programs include: Oct. 10, the regular Kiwanis meeting will be at Gary Honald’s orchard: the Middle School Builders Club joins Kiwanians for fishing, pressing apples, and a barbecue lunch from 10 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.

Oct. 17, no noontime meeting: The club’s installation dinner will be at Faith Lutheran Church fellowship hall, 2810 W. 10th St., 6 p.m.

Oct. 24, is Trish Neal from LegalShield on how to protect your child and family from identity theft.

Oct. 31, is Tai Rogers, who took part in the Hugh O’Brian Youth program, a seminar that teaches leadership, service, and innovation.

October 12

PIANO DUO: Classical piano duo Karen Eddleman and Ronald Potts will perform at the launch of The Dalles Civic Auditorium theater rehabilitation capital campaign Saturday, Oct. 12, 6:30 to 10 p.m., in the theater.

HARVEST FESTIVAL: The Dalles Farmers Market Harvest Festival Renaissance fair will be Saturday, Oct. 12. The event will feature a fruit pie contest, dress your veggie and fall flower arranging contests. High School band members will be serving barbecue.

HARVEST BAZAAR: Flagstone’s Fall Harvest Bazaar will be Saturday Oct. 12, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., 3325 Columbia View Drive. It offers a chance to get an early start on holiday shopping.

October 14

PROGRAM MEETING: Distinguished Young Woman will have a parent meeting for all parents of young women who are juniors in high school this year on Monday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. at Spooky’s Pizza Parlor.

This will be an informational meeting outlining what’s involved with the program.

October 17

VOLUNTEER EVENT: There will be an Open House for anyone interested in learning about volunteering at Mid-Columbia Medical Center; Thursday, Oct. 17 anytime between 10 a.m. to noon, Conference Room 1. Everyone is welcome.

October 30

OFFICIALS NEEDED: Mid Columbia Basketball Officials are looking for new or experienced officials for the upcoming season. Training will be provided for new officials. It is a good way to make extra money and get some exercise.

November 23

HOLIDAY BAZAAR: St. Peter’s Holiday Bazaar is now taking reservations for table rentals for their Nov. 23 bazaar. Rentals are $30.

December 7

CHOIR REHEARSALS: The Cascade Singers will prepare works this fall by two great composers whose 200th birthdays are celebrated in 2013: Ciuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner. “Verdi, Wagner, et al” is the theme for the community choir’s holiday concert Dec. 7 and 8.

Singers meet under the direction of Lloyd Walworth Mondays form 7 to 9 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 10th and Union streets, in The Dalles. A one-hour work session takes place Thursdays at 7 p.m. Rehearsals are open to all interested singers, who will then audition with the director. The choir often appears at community events with formal concerts at Christmas, St. Patrick’s Day and late spring.

MARRIAGE COURSE: Discuss marriage with your partner based on topical video presentations in a romantic setting during the Marriage Course, each Wednesday, Oct. 2, to Nov. 20, from 6 to 8 p.m., at The Riverenza, 410 E. 10th St., The Dalles. VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT: The Dalles HOPE Warming Place located in the St. Vincent de Paul ministry building at 315 W. Third Place, needs volunteers to join teams staffing the overnight accommodations for the homeless.

The TD HOPE Warming Place is schedule to open on cold nights beginning Nov. 17. Volunteers receive training and are asked to volunteer for one night of the week as needed.

ZUMBA PROGRAM: Northern Wasco County Parks and Recreation along with Licensed Zumba Instructor’s Marsha Morrison and Brenda Green are offering Zumba to the community at the Muscle and Fitness Center, 915 Garrison St., Mondays at 9 a.m., Tuesdays 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., and Thursdays 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Drop-in fee is $5. SOIL TESTING: OSU Wasco County Master Gardeners now offer soil testing every week through October 2013. Garden soil will be tested for nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, pH, humus, and texture.

The cost is $25 for each sample tested. For information on how to collect a sample, contact the OSU Wasco County Extension Service at 541-296-5494, or find out online at This service is available to home gardeners only.

GENEALOGY MEETS: The Columbia Gorge Genealogical Society meets the second Saturday of each month at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center. The public and guests are welcome. A no-host lunch starts at noon in the Basalt Cafe.
