The Dalles officer wounded, suspect killed in Wishram exchange

— THE DALLES, Ore. (AP) - A police officer from The Dalles, Ore., was shot and wounded Wednesday night and a suspect was fatally shot as law enforcement officers conducted an investigation in nearby Wishram, Wash., The Dalles Police Chief Jay Waterbury said.

The 42-year-old officer did not suffer life-threatening injuries and was expected to be released after treatment at Mid-Columbia Medical Center in The Dalles, the chief said. The wounded officer was not identified. Waterbury said he was a 17-year veteran of The Dalles police department.

Klickitat County, Wash., sheriff's officers and Oregon State Police were also present in Wishram when the shooting took place outside a home, Waterbury said.

The chief said he had no details of how many shots were fired or what started the gunfire. Waterbury said he couldn't discuss the nature of the investigation.

No other officers or civilians were injured, he said.

The Klickitat County sheriff's office will investigate the shooting, Waterbury said. A call to the sheriff's office was not immediately returned.

Wishram lies across the Columbia River from Celilo Indian Village, east of The Dalles.
