Letter to the Editor: Support pool

— To the editor:

I have been swimming on The Dalles Swim Team, (TDST), for 11 years. Currently, I am a freshmen on the swim team at Malone University in Canton, Ohio. I really wanted to swim in college, even if that meant going to school across the country.

College swimming has been an awesome experience for me and I appreciate the many years that I have spent on the swim team at home. It would mean a lot to come home in the summer to a new pool. The pool we have has been a great asset to the community, but it is failing. I may not have much time left that I can swim on TDST, but the team is young and growing. If I had more time to swim on TDST, I would be devastated if I couldn’t swim anymore because the pool shut down. Being a lifeguard this past summer, I saw many of the same kids at the pool every day, and some twice a day.

It made me happy to see all the kids so eager to jump in the water and play. Lap swim is also popular and has its daily regulars. Our 50 meter pool is unique. Being outdoors makes it a popular attraction on a hot summer day, and with the new elements that would be added, it would attract even more people. If we lose our beautiful outdoor pool, it’s going to be greatly missed. That is why I am asking you to please vote “yes” for a new pool.
