Letter to the Editor: Pool a community benefit

— Pool positives

To the editor:

(Edited for length.)

I would like to ask the voters of the Northern Wasco County Park and Recreation District to vote yes to construct a new swimming pool. I manage the pool in Goldendale and I have had the privilege to work with and get to know most of the staff and lifeguards at your swimming pool. I have also developed a professional working relationship with Scott Green, the executive director of your park and recreation district. The Dalles is fortunate to have such a dedicated staff.

Swimming pools provide more than just recreation and a way to cool off on a hot summer day. The safety factor alone with having a swimming pool that is guarded by American Red Cross lifeguards is so important, especially with the Columbia River and other creeks so readily accessible in The Dalles. Countless individuals, primarily as children, have had the opportunity to take swimming lessons at the current facility.

Let us not forget the hundreds, or even thousands of youth who have participated with The Dalles swim team, building not only strong swimmers, but also a strong work ethic.

Having a modern facility run by professionals is a benefit to the community, and will draw tourists. Another economic and social impact includes the teenage lifeguards who often work for the first time in their young lives. Not only are they guarding the lives of the swimmers, they are also learning customer service skills, team work and teaching swimming lessons to youth.

I hope the voters can see all the positives that come from a swimming pool.

Manager Central Klickitat County Park & Recreation District
